Four documents related to Henry Spring's service during the French and Indian War: an order to Spring from Spencer Phips requiring an account of enlisted men (1755); his commission as Captain of a company in William Williams' regiment of the Mass. Provincial Forces (1758); an order from Thomas Pownall to William Williams regarding requirements for equipment and uniforms, with an appended note from Williams (1758); and an inventory of John Turner's (of Spring's company) things following his death at Lake George.

Spencer Phips (1685-1757) was born "Spencer Bennett" in Rowley, Mass., but was adopted at an early age by his uncle Gov. William Phips (1651-1695). He was educated at Harvard (1703) and settled in Cambridge, Mass., where he served as state representative in 1721, then town councillor, 1721-1732; he became the state's Lieutenant Governor, 1732-1757. William Williams, Jr., was born in 1688 in Hatfield, Mass., the son of the Reverend William and Eliza Cotton Williams. A 1705 graduate of Harvard College, he settled in Weston, Mass., in 1708 and served as minister there until 1750 when he was dismissed on charges of lascivious and immoral conduct. During his ministerial career he had speculated in land and after his dismissal he devoted himself, not too successfully, to his land investments.
